One of my absolute favourite comediennes, Catherine Tate, did a number of sketches for charity show Comic Relief this year, amongst which one featured The Doctor, David Tennant, and another James Bond aka Craig The Clown. (...) And yes, I've been watching these clips a couple of hundred times now, and I am still laughing my eyes out. Pun intended. As a student of English, seeing David Tennant trying to teach indifferent pupils about Shakespeare's sonnets, rhyming couplets and all, was unbelievably entertaining. "Shakespeare's a genius!" And as he becomes more and more desperate, it seems rather inevitable when he eventually pulls out his sonic screwdriver and - well - surprise, surprise! see the clips for yourselves. I'll only mention the indirect remark involving a rose...by any other name...and a smile..."Fancy Billie Piper, sir?" Oh - fantastic!
But in short, and for those of you who are not familiar with The Tate Show; Catherine's characters - these extremely annoying, yet also extremely hilarious, constantly-chatting, completely oblivious chav-parodies - are here aggresively reluctant when it comes to believing the identity of male opponents David and Daniel. Well, in fact, David tries to convince her that he is NOT The Doctor whereas Daniel has quite a hard time convincing her that he is in love with her, despite the fact that he's an actor playing James Bond, when she thinks he's only working in a shop and pretending to be someone he's not. I'll try to post the clips later, but as for now I just have to cite some of the brilliant dialogue...for instance, during new teacher Logan (David) and his attempt of silencing Lauren (Catherine):
Can I ask you a question?
WHAT is it?!
Are you The Doctor?
Doctor WHO? I don't know what you're talking about!
You look like Doctor Who, though!
I'm not Doctor Who, I'm your English teacher!!
I don't think you are though! I think you're a 945-year-old Time Lord!
And so on and so forth... It does get worse! Regarding the Daniel Craig-sketch, moreover, Catherine Tate should only have known how much pleasure I take in seeing Mr Bond himself making sandwiches and go camping on a ridiculous tandem bicycle, then buying teddy bears for older girlfriends and drinking lemonade. That actually made my day. I have to admit, though, he was kind of cute. "She doesn't know what I do, but she knows who I *am*...!" How lovely an Old Bond-reference! And now look what this lady makes me say! Gosh... But - go Catherine Tate! And I do hope she keeps using "my guys" for her parodies. This is amusing, to say the least. But not very healthy. Cos: now, I wish I had an enthusiastic teacher like that. Or - I wish I had a wooing boyfriend like that. Hmmm. Catherine Tate, what have your sketches done to me?!
